Utah Ready to Shine Again: 2034 Winter Olympics to Return to Salt Lake City
The International Olympic Committee announced that the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah. This will be the second time the Winter Games have come to Utah, the first event 32 years ago, and the fifth time in the history of the event that it is held in America.
Gov. Cox was excited about the Games, saying it’s more than just competing; it is about community and excellence—two areas where Utah shines. The bid was supported by more than 80% of Utahns and all elected leaders showing support, standing ready to once again open their doors in 2034 to the world.
It’s the only state that has maintained an Olympic legacy from the time it hosted the 2002 Games, where all the venues have been kept intact and even doubled as one of the vital training centres for athletes from over 30 nations. More than 1.5 million tickets were sold during the Games, and the state found itself in its elements in 2002, with the largest daily attendance ever recorded for a Winter Game of above 70,000 fans. In addition, the 2002 Games were broadcast, ticket, and sponsorship unprecedented successes, reaching 2.1 billion viewers in 160 countries and territories while racking up 13.1 billion viewer hours. There were 22,000 volunteers involved and 2,399 athletes who participated in the 2002 Games, so appropriately, it can be claimed as the most successful Games ever held.
This will be further advanced by the 2034 Winter Olympics, which are scheduled for February 10-26, and Paralympics from March 10-19. Utah is ready, excited, and humbled to host the Winter Games once again, striving to reach even greater heights.
