Turmoil Brings Indian Rail Services to Bangladesh to a Halt
Indian Railways has suspended all its train services to Bangladesh amid rising unrest in neighbouring country.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country as student-led protests escalated. The suspension pertains to a few routes, including the Kolkata-Dhaka-Kolkata Maitree Express, 13109/13110 and 13107/13108, the Kolkata-Khulna-Kolkata Bandhan Express, and the Dhaka-New Jalpaiguri-Dhaka Mitali Express, which has remained out of service since June 21.
In an address to the nation on Monday, Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that Prime Minister Hasina resigned and an interim government would be formed. The student-led non-cooperation movement has put a lot of pressure on Hasina’s government for several weeks. The protests were over a policy setting aside 30 per cent of government jobs for relatives of those who fought for Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan in the 1971 civil war, according to Dhaka officials.
