NPCI introduces ‘UPI One World’ wallet for foreign visitors

NPCI has brought out 'UPI One World' for foreign tourists who come to India. The move will provide hassle-free digital payment services in real-time to international visitors to help them connect with rich cultural heritage and vibrant landscapes across India. The unique offering will extend to esteemed delegates visiting the World Heritage Committee meeting in New Delhi during July 21-31, 2024.

After first being introduced during the G20 Summit hosted last year, the UPI One World wallet is now available for people from several other nations. It will allow international visitors to fully use this “made in India” technology with greater ease and security.

The UPI One World wallet would be available by PPI issuers at airports and hotels, identifying money exchange locations and other touchpoints after completing the full KYC with the passport and valid visa. Arrangements would also be made to provide these wallets at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, which is the venue of the World Heritage Committee meeting, as a matter of convenience to the delegates. Following issuance, loading by cash or other means of payment is available in the wallet.

The facility also allows international visitors to make payments at merchant locations by scanning QR codes through the UPI One World app. The residual can be returned to the payment source, subject to foreign exchange regulations. This enablement has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of NPCI, IDFC First Bank, and Transcorp International Limited under the guidance of the Reserve Bank of India.

“We are excited to bring the UPI experience to foreign visitors coming to India through UPI One World,” said an NPCI spokesperson. “This will empower them with UPI, the most preferred payment option of Indians, and thus enable visitors to have a better experience. It shall be a big leap towards a more inter-connected, global digital payments ecosystem, as it allows foreign travellers to experience India’s real-time payments system. The UPI One World will enable international travellers to plan their financial requirements by easily loading and facilitate transfer of any balance left back to the source of payment.”
