Ministry Bats for Tourism Police for Higher Safety of Tourists
Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has informed that the Ministry of Tourism has, for some time, been at the forefront of a drive to ensure that each State Government and UT administration constitutes a Tourism Police force.
The Ministry of Tourism has started a 24×7 Multi-Lingual Tourist Info-Helpline for the safety and security of travellers. People can contact the help line at its toll-free number or through shortcode 1363. The facility shall operate in 12 languages: 10 international languages besides Hindi and English—German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic. It gives information and travel tips to domestic and international tourists, especially those who are distressed while traveling through India.
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister Shekhawat said that these efforts of the Ministry have led some State governments and UT administrations, including those of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, and Uttar Pradesh, to deploy tourist police in one form or another.
