The cobblestone streets of Havana with its classic vintage cars and colonial architecture are bound to take your breath away. Laze on the pristine turquoise beaches of Varadero, relishing the delectable Cuban cuisine while experiencing the warmth and hospitality of the locals.

Sharing a diverse array of experiences for travellers, we caught up with Abel Aballe, Charge d’Affaires, a.i, from the Embassy of Cuba in India for an exclusive interview.

A cultural mosaic

India, a land of ancient history – dating back to thousands of years is unlike Cuba. However, many aspects still put them on the same pedestal other than the broad history. Cuba became a unique blend of cultures after the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. The nation is home for African, European, Asian and indigenous people. This syncretism is evident in every aspect of Cuban life. One can see it in music and dance, as well as in art and its cuisine. Aballe commented on this diversity and said, “The blend that conforms to the Cuban nationality and culture, the Cuban heritage, is unique. Even when you compare it to other countries. The level of mixture here has no comparison.”

Warmth and hospitality of the locals

It is not only about the art and history that the Cuban culture offers; it’s also about the warmth and hospitality of the local people. India is all about being open to one another and having rich cultural ties. Cuba’s openness and friendliness with its tourists hence resonate deeply with Indians. This makes the tourists feel at home.

Captivating festivals and celebrations

Cuba is somehow synonymous with celebrations—these range from the rhythm of salsa to the grandeur of carnivals. Indian tourists find this endless parade of festivities particularly appealing since India is known for its captivating culture of festivals. The official notes fascination with Cuba’s iconic vintage cars and colonial architecture. There is also the unique flavour of Cuban cigars, even among those who don’t smoke.

Bridging cultures: festivals and exchanges

In recent years, Cuba has actively increased its cultural presence in India. The Cuban National Folklore Ensemble’s performances in Delhi, Shillong, and Calcutta were a resounding success. They showcased 300 years of Cuban dance and music. These performances, featuring Afro-Cuban rhythms, salsa, merengue cha-cha-cha, and rumba, are deeply connected to the Indian audience.

The official also talks about the ongoing efforts to organise Cuban festivals in India. These would feature films, music, dance, and cuisine. One such event is planned around October 20th which is also the National Day of Cuban Culture. It promises a rich display of Cuban art and heritage in Delhi.

Growing tourism infrastructure

Boosting infrastructure is another work the Cuban authorities took on to improve accommodation and tourism in the past few years. The nation created 80000 hotel rooms, with 75% four and five star rated places to stay. This development is not confined to Havana but is spread across the island. Tourists can enjoy modern amenities wherever they go on their itinerary.

The nation’s marketing strategies

Recognising the potential of the Indian market, Cuba has intensified its promotional efforts. The country is participating in significant tourism fairs. Additionally, partnerships with tour operators and specialised media engagements are being pursued. These are some steps taken to attract Indian tourists. The official mentions that Cuba was awarded as the “Most Promising Destination” at the OTM 2024 tourism fair.

A Bright future ahead indeed

Although the COVID-19 pandemic did pose some challenges to the nation, despite everything, Cuba’s optimistic outlook toward its future did not shatter. The country is steadily recovering. There is a year-end target of 3.2 to 3.4 million tourists. The goal is to surpass the pre-pandemic numbers. Welcoming more Indian tourists is a priority. Cuba has much to offer- unparalleled cultural richness and commendable hospitality. The vibrant Cuban festivals, cultural influences and the warmth of its people bring out the island nation’s natural charm. It is not only about a holiday but also for Indian tourists; it is a fantastic blend of cultural celebration and a mosaic of history.

For those seeking an extraordinary travel destination or more of a home away from home, Cuba would provide a fantastic set of experiences. As Cuba continues to enhance its tourism offerings it, in turn is looking forward to strengthening its cultural ties with India.
