Kenya Unveils Digital Nomad Visa and Introduces New Electronic Travel Authorisation System for Transit Passengers

At the Magical Kenya Travel Expo 2024, held in Nairobi on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, President William Ruto officially unveiled Kenya’s Digital Nomad Work Permit programme, designed to entice foreign remote workers to reside and work in the country.

Ruto emphasised the significance of the new program, calling it a milestone for the country. “The Digital Nomad Work Permit is specifically designed to welcome global digital professionals, allowing them to live and work in Kenya while enjoying the country’s natural beauty and high-quality lifestyle,” he said. “Kenya can be your home, where you and your family can experience the wonders of Magical Kenya every day, all while serving clients from anywhere in the world on your digital platform. We are expanding our fibre optic footprint across Kenya so that from any part of Kenya, you can work because you will be connected.”

Those wishing to apply for Kenya’s Digital Nomad visa must fulfil several essential criteria. These include holding a valid passport, providing proof of remote work conducted outside of Kenya, demonstrating evidence of accommodation within the country and presenting a clean criminal record. Additionally, applicants are required to meet a minimum annual income threshold of €50,000.

While the announcement of the Digital Nomad visa has sparked significant interest, some aspects remain unclear, such as the permit’s validity period, associated costs and the official launch date of the scheme. Further details are expected to be revealed in the coming days.
