Qatar to Accepted UPI Payments for Indian Visitors
NPCI International Payments Limited, or NIPL, signed a memorandum of understanding with Qatar National Bank, or QNB, the premier financial institution in the Middle East and Africa, for the implementation of QR code-based Unified Payments Interface in the State of Qatar. This agreement is one of its kind where UPI payment acceptance will be enabled on QNB's vast network of merchant outlets, which would benefit visitors from India to Qatar.
This deal will thus facilitate preferred modes of payment for Indian tourists at various touch-points, including retail outlets, tourist and leisure destinations, duty-free shops, and hotels across Qatar. Needless to say, this is most welcoming news, indeed, considering that Indians are among the second largest number of visitors to Qatar.
Anubhav Sharma, Deputy Chief of Partnerships and Business Development, NPCI International, is excited about this collaboration given the rich value it brings to the high number of Indians visiting Qatar. “With acceptance of UPI, sweat-free transactions and a seamless travel experience await Indian tourists in Qatar. On the other hand, Qatari merchants will get easy access to an increased customer base and cost-effective payment processing,” he added.
On this count, Senior Executive Vice President QNB Group Retail Banking Adel Ali Al-Malki noted that the initiative set a new height in innovation across the region. He said that digital payment solution will hugely add convenience to the travel experience and transform how transactions are executed today.
It has further strengthened NIPL’s commitment to using technology and innovation to develop a truly efficient digital payments ecosystem for Indians across the globe.
