Disney Cruises to Set sail in Japan with $2 Billion Push

Disney will offer cruise holidays in Japan following a $2 billion deal between Disney Cruise Line and Oriental Land, the operator of Tokyo Disney. Disney stated that Oriental Land would be operating a Disney branded cruise line in Japan by the beginning of 2029.

Around 4,000 passengers and 1,500 crewmembers will be carried in the new cruise ship. Cruises will be of short distances, maximizing the one offered by the metropolitan Tokyo area. Yearly targeted passengers are 400,000 posting US$620 million in earlier years. This investment would be the latest chapter in Tokyo Disney Resort owner and operator Oriental Land’s 40 year plus relationship with Disney. Another cruise ship as a source of fun and leisure, the Disney Magic Cruise Ship would be earmarked particularly for Japanese Disney fans and foreign Disney tourists, replete with classic Disney-style entertainments, foods and guest services.

According to Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, “Disney Cruise Line has ambitious plans to bring family vacations and Disney storytelling to more guests around the world than ever before. We are thrilled to continue the success of this expansion as we collaborate with Oriental Land to introduce another distinctly Disney vacation experience to families and fans in Japan”

Yumiko Takano, Representative Director, Chairperson, and CEO of Oriental Land, remarked, “I am sincerely proud that Disney and Oriental Land will be able to work together to create a world-class cruise business in Japan. Oriental Land will use their knowhow from the theme park business to continue pushing boundaries and provide family entertainment cruise experiences filled with inspiration and surprise.”

The new ship will be designed by Walt Disney Imagineering so that it is built in the Meyer Werft Shipyard, located in Papenburg. Moreover, sister-ship to the one which shall be embarked upon by the Disney Wish, customers find a great deal of venues, experiences, and amenities localized with some alterations tailor-made precisely for the Japanese clientele.
