Jetwing Kandy Gallery Won Gold for Best Environmental Practices
The Jetwing Kandy Gallery, a family-owned luxury hotel in Sri Lanka, won the highly popular gold award in the category of Hospitality due to its green management practices at the Presidential Environment Awards 2024.
The hotel said the awards, held annually by the Central Environmental Authority under the Ministry of Environment, were for significant environmental contributions in areas including sustainability reporting, pollution control, solid waste management, and reduction of carbon emissions.
Initiatives at Jetwing Kandy Gallery include a solar photovoltaic system for over 40 percent of its electricity use daily, a wastewater treatment plant that enables nearly 100 percent recycling for irrigation, as well as comprehensive waste management whereby waste food is turned into biogas, garden refuse is composted, and plastic is recycled. Also featured is an organic on-site garden with local herbs and vegetables to further enhance the dining experience for the guests.
The selection process for these awards involved more than 900 applications, followed by on-site verifications by a panel of judges from the CEA, academia, and state institutions. Jetwing Kandy Gallery was the only gold winner from the hospitality industry amongst the 23 gold awardees in total.
The hotel group pointed out, “Jetwing Kandy Gallery joins its other properties that have won similar accolades earlier, reiterating Jetwing’s commitment toward sustainability and community engagement.”
