Sikkim Puts New Sustainability Rule Into Action for Tourist Vehicles

An official directive stated that all tourist vehicles entering Sikkim shall be compulsorily equipped with a big garbage bag. According to the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, this initiative shall help engage the community in the state's efforts toward making the environment sustainable.

Now, it would be the duty of tour operators, travel agencies, and vehicle drivers to educate their traveling guests on the proper use of the garbage bags they provided for disposing of litter. Random inspections of tourist vehicles by the authorities shall be made to enforce the new rule, with fines against those violating it.

Alongside these efforts, officials would also carry out awareness campaigns amongst tourists to sensitize them about waste management and the requirement of environmental sustainability if Sikkim has to be kept green and clean.
